About Me

I wanted to be a writer ever since I was a little girl, when I spent hours writing about fairies and puppies and the girls like me who found them. My favorite genre is what I call “books with a soul”—books that convey big, important ideas in simple, poetic language, primarily found in children's literature. The Little Prince, The Tale of Despereaux, The Chronicles of Narnia, Peter Pan, and A Wrinkle in Time are my most beloved examples, and my favorite books. I always dreamed of writing a book with a soul, and I hope I've succeeded in The Seventeenth Quest.

I spend most of my days wrangling my collection of miniature humans. In my spare time, however, I enjoy reading anything from mystery to theology to poetry. I am also the co-owner of a small classical theater company, in which I've acted, directed, stage-managed, and more. I’m often found crocheting or knitting anything from Baby Yodas to dice bags to Christmas stockings.

I live in Northern Virginia with my husband and resident thesaurus Aaron, and our aforementioned darling children, whom we raise on a steady diet of fruit pouches and fairy tales.

KA⋅MA⋅KA⋅WI⋅WO⋅O⋅LE

kah-MAH-kah-VEE-voh-OH-lay

My last name is pronounced kah-MAH-kah-VEE-voh-OH-lay, with the emphasis is on every other syllable. The Ws are pronounced like Vs, and the Os are pronounced separately.

Fun fact—it’s actually the shortened version of the original Hawaiian name—Kamakawiwooleokamehamehaekahi.

It means the fearless eye of Kamehameha the First,” and was a name given by King Kamehameha to one of my husband's warrior ancestors after a battle where he took an axe to the head and survived.

You can hear the correct pronunciation by clicking the button above. But fear not if you're still struggling: I often go by Elisabeth K!
